Scandal-Free Music in Greece

Is the case of Greece a Scandale? I can’t give you the answer to that, but I do think it’s a good opportunity to check out Greek music. Most likely the most famous song of Greece is the “Sirtaki” by Mikis Theodorakis, which was popularized world-wide in 1964 by the movie “Zorba the Greek” and has been group-danced by millions of people all over the world ever since. Here is an original scene from the movie containing the slowly starting, yet steadily accelerating instrumental music piece in the background:

More recently, Despina Vandi has been enjoying continued success over the past few years. Her following song has been covered in both Turkish and Arabic, which popularized her in Turkey and much of the Middle East: Anaveis Foties

Despina Vandi represents the contemporary pop music style of Greece called “Laïká”, which kind of is a cross-over between dancefloor and ballad/folk music…here a further example of that style featured in the closing ceremony of the 2004 Olympics in Athens  by Eleftheria Arvanitaki: Dynata Dynata:

Have a scandalous week (or scandal-free, whatever you prefer),
